Column # 154 The Fuzzy Far Away

Is it just me, or do things seem really fuzzy when I am far away and talking on the phone to the man I love?

The Fuzzy Far Away

“Hi, Cool-guy.” I said into the phone.

“Hi, honey. We’re just sitting down to dinner.”

“Oh.” I was disappointed. I felt like talking. Cool-guy left me in New York with my family so he could return to Colorado to work. I looked forward to our nightly chats. “No problem. I’ll talk to you later. Tell Jill I said hello.”

“No.” He said with food in his mouth. “You can talk to me while I eat.”

I laughed. “I’m not going to interrupt the nice dinner you made for Jill. I’ll call you later.”

Jill was an ex-girlfriend who remained a close friend of Cool-guy’s. I was so glad he had Jill in his life because Ralph was an ex-boyfriend of mine who remained a close friend. It was a huge relief that I didn’t have to be defensive about my friendship with Ralph, and he appreciated not having to hide his friendship with Jill either.

“No way.” He said. “It’s not every day my beautiful girlfriend calls from New York.”

“I’ve called you every day since you’ve left.” I laughed. “How’s your neck feeling? Still stiff?”

“No. It’s feeling much better now. We just got out of the hot tub.”

WHAT? They were naked? Together? In the hot tub? Oh. I know. They had no interest in each other. They had dated ten years ago. But. Still they were naked. Together. At his house. In the hot tub. In the water. Alone. At his house.

“It was so beautiful out there.” He continued. “And it snowed so everything was glowing.”

“It was magical.” Jill yelled from the background.

They were having a magical evening? They were naked? They were naked in the hot tub?

“Then when we got out Jill gave me a neck massage for about an hour. My neck feels so much better.” He said while he chewed. “She has great massaging hands.”

Was he dressed when she massaged his neck? She massaged him for about an hour? An hour? Her hands were all over him for an hour? What? Um. Wasn’t it my job to massage his neck? Oh. Sure. I wasn’t there right now. Maybe I should be glad she was there to fill in. To rub his sore neck for me.

I felt far away. Everything seemed a bit fuzzy.

Jill grabbed the phone. “Hi, Holly.”

“Hi.”

“We wish you were here.”

“Yeah. Me too.”

“He made me all my favorite foods. Salmon and spinach and beet greens and butternut squash soup.”

“Oh. Yeah. He said he was making soup.” I said.

He said he was making it for me. Butternut squash soup was MY favorite. He was making it for my homecoming tomorrow. Was it her favorite too? Did he tell her that he made it for her?

What an evening they were having. First they got naked in the hot water while they noticed the magical night. Then she gave him a one hour massage before dinner. Then he made her all of her favorite foods. Great. Oh. Great. I’m so glad that they get to spend quality time together.

Jill continued. “We had a great talk about his neck going out. I think it’s really interesting that it went out at the end of the trip right after he met your whole family.”

“Yeah.” I said. “I thought that was a strange coincidence.”

“Oh. It’s no coincidence.” She said. “He must have been really nervous about meeting your family, and held all that nervousness inside. That was a big thing he had to do, meeting your family.”

Hmmm. I mean. He kept insisting that he wasn’t nervous at all. That he was really comfortable with the whole idea of meeting everyone. In fact it was all his idea to even go to New York. I would like to have this conversation with him. Was she warming him up to talk to me about it, or wearing him out so he wouldn’t want to talk any more?

“He did great. Everyone liked him.” I said.

“I’m not surprised. He’s an incredible man.” She soothed.

“Um. Can I talk to him?” I smiled. “I only have a few more minutes.”

“Sure.” She laughed. “Thanks for joining us for dinner.”

I half laughed. “Any time.”

Thanks for joining THEM for dinner? What was that about? When did THEY become a THEM?

“Hi honey.” He said.

I relaxed. “How was your meeting?”

“Oh. It went great. We’re getting so much done at work. Really moving in the right direction. We don’t have the new meat figured out, but that’s going to take some time. What did you do today?”

“We had to put Moses to sleep.”

“Oh. I’m so sorry. He was my favorite dog.”

“Mine too.”

“Wait.” Jill said. “Let me talk to Holly again for a minute.”

She took the phone. “I want to tell you about this new healer I found.”

I sighed. Yeah. Ok. “Yes?”

“I think he could cure you of your visual memory problems. He only costs twelve hundred dollars for four sessions.”

I shook my head. “I don’t have that kind of money.”

“Holly. You can put it on your credit card.”

“Jill. Thanks for thinking of me. But. I’m not searching for some miracle cure. The cones in my eyes are burned out. It’s no surprise.”

She dropped the tone of her voice. “Holly. You’ll never be happy till you’re healthy.”

“Nope. That’s where you’re wrong.” I said over the long distance lines. “I’m happy every day of my life. I really am. But. Thanks for thinking of me. Not...”

“Oh.” She interrupted. “I have to go. Cool-guy is laying on the floor in front of the fireplace. He looks bored and lonely. I need to get off the phone and give him a little attention.” She laughed. “He made me this great dinner and I’m being a bad guest.”

A bad guest? She got naked, massaged him, and ate his food.

Yeah. I know. Things seem fuzzy when far away.
